Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics Addition

University of Colorado | Boulder, Colorado

This facility is a joint institute of the University of Colorado Boulder and the National Institute of Science and Technology. The facility houses some of the world's leaders in astrophysics, biophysics, and nanoscience, including several Nobel Prize Laureates. We provided civil and structural engineering for the 49,800 SF, "X Wing" addition, which contains two basement levels of precision laboratories and specialized equipment. Extensive design efforts provided a quiet environment that minimized structural vibration in these highly sensitive spaces. We also provided detailing for over 150 precast pieces that made up the addition. Portions of the building remained occupied during construction. Martin/Martin provided civil and structural engineering services for the original building as well.
