Overview

Martin/Martin’s protective design team has over 20 years of experience assessing, analyzing, and designing buildings and structures for blast loads. Our work ranges from evaluating blast loads to designing exterior envelopes, interior partitions under confinement, and overall structural systems to mitigate damage from multiple threat profiles and delivery mechanisms.

Working closely with security consultants, architects, and civil/structural engineers, we’ve developed mitigation measures for industrial facilities, airspace, high-profile urban organizations, and U.S. Department of Defense and Federal Government facilities, as well as organizations operating in high-threat environments. Our services span threat assessments, feasibility studies, security design criteria, and detailed design of façades, structural systems, and emergency rescue and recovery systems—including proprietary systems such as curtain walls, doors, and precast. Our expertise in explosive effects and dynamic response allows us to deliver cost-effective hardening strategies integrated with security operations to reduce risk to acceptable levels.

Aerospace, Industrial, and other Manufacturing Blast Mitigating Design

Overview

Martin/Martin’s protective design team helps aerospace, industrial and manufacturing owners evaluate and mitigate the risk of accidental explosions while protecting personnel, facilities, and operations. We collaborate with process safety and facility engineers to understand probability, map blast loads, and align construction types and siting decisions with acceptable risk levels. Using computational fluid dynamics and expertise in dynamic structural response, we define realistic blast and pressure scenarios to optimize structural design. The result is practical, cost-effective solutions integrated with architecture and process safety controls, translating sophisticated risk-based assessments into clear, buildable engineering strategies.

Explosive Safety Design

Explosive Safety Design

Overview

Martin/Martin’s protective design services team helps defense and law enforcement clients evaluate accidental explosion risks related to storing and managing explosives and develop mitigation measures to protect personnel, facilities, and operations. We identify risk and implement safety requirements from federal regulations (ATF, OSHA, DOT, EPA), military criteria (UFC 4-420-01, DESR 6055.09), and applicable state/local codes.

Using Quantity-Distance methods, advanced siting assessments, and computational fluid dynamics combined with our expertise in building dynamic performance, we define controlled explosion and pressure parameters to optimize structural design. We deliver practical, cost-effective solutions integrated with architecture and process safety controls, supported by a multidisciplinary team capable of transforming risk-based assessments into detailed engineering designs.

Landscape & Civil Protective Design

Landscape & Civil Protective Design

Overview

Martin/Martin’s protective design services help owners, developers, architects, and engineers identify threats and vulnerabilities within landscape and civil design to mitigate risk and strengthen physical security in high-risk areas.

We combine expertise in vehicle ramming design with Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) to enhance security while preserving comfort, enjoyment, and usability of high-density outdoor spaces and key entrances that may be targeted by aggressors.

Our work ranges from locating high-density areas on site and analyzing lines of sight to reduce sniper risk, to vehicle vector analysis and specifying or designing vehicle barriers and architectural/civil features that mitigate vehicle ramming attacks while maintaining an efficient, attractive landscape.

We deliver practical, cost-effective solutions integrated with landscape, civil design, and security operations, supported by a multidisciplinary team that translates threat-based risk assessments into detailed engineering designs.
