Parametric Rebar Detailing Wins Industry Award

LAKEWOOD, COLO. – Use of parametric rebar detailing by the Martin/Martin, Inc., Construction Engineering Services (CES) team has earned the firm an Honors Award by the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI) in their inaugural awards program.

Martin/Martin was among 20 firms recognized by CRSI for services that improve a structure’s value, sustainability, appearance and durability. The firm’s entry, Parametric Rebar Detailing by Engineer of Record, was recognized in the Innovation category.

Several years ago Martin/Martin began providing an alternative delivery method for reinforcing steel shop drawings to our construction clients. For projects on which the firm is also the engineer-of-record, this service has allowed Martin/Martin to improve the schedule and reduce the number of RFI’s versus traditional third-party rebar detailing.

Contracting directly with the general contractor, the firm uses an integrated approach with the project design team and takes advantage of project building information modeling (BIM). Unlike most detailers, Martin/Martin models all reinforcing steel parametrically and within the same model used by the project design team. This allows a degree of coordination not possible by a third-party detailer.

Martin/Martin is also able to begin detailing much sooner. The firm is typically contracted for these services before the design is complete. The CES team works with the design team while the design and drawings are being completed and gets the drawings reviewed prior to release. A set of drawings ready for fabrication can typically be issued with one week of construction documents. This can be a time savings of four to six weeks!

The result of this innovative approach has been significant schedule and cost savings, and greatly enhanced coordination and conflict avoidance.

“We’ve received feedback on many projects from our contractor clients who have told us they could not have met their aggressive schedules, and have never had fewer field issues, because of our parametric rebar detailing services,” said Shane Ewing, Martin/Martin principal and head of the CES team.
