Charles Keyes, PE, SE, LEED AP

Principal, Structural Engineering

Novel designs have intrigued Charles throughout his lengthy professional career as a Martin/Martin structural engineer. In the days of the firm predecessor, KKBNA, when a unique project came in the door, chances were good that Charles would be working on it.

Today Charles specializes in special structures. He has acted as principal on a variety of longspan space frames, arches, precast, cable and other special building systems. He works directly with artists, and associated fabrication and installation staff to design art pieces comprised of unconventional materials: carbon fiber, cast aluminum, fabric and glass. Charles has acted as consultant in product development for solar panel manufacturers, and in stress analysis and developing testing programs for unusual structures, as well.

With his signature contemplative nature and dry wit, Charles relishes the collaborative effort and the opportunity to explore ideas with an eye toward efficiency. His approach as a project manager is to listen, be proactive, discuss and infuse concepts. The results can be seen in projects including the Denver Center for the Performing Arts complex and Coors Field in Denver, and in the structural integrity of a variety of large sculptures aboard the Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruise Line ships.

Charles has been with Martin/Martin since 1965 (KKBNA 1965 – 1988). He has both worked and played extensively throughout the world. When vacationing, Charles favors the simplicity of country sides and villages rather than large cities.
